Puebla or Sonora? The race for Olinia

342

Puebla has everything. It has plenty of human talent, technological resources and even the political will to host a project that promises to be a turning point in the national economy.

The possible installation of the Olinia electric car assembly plant would not only put the state at the center of global automotive development, but would also be a driving force to revitalize the Puebla economy. However, nothing is guaranteed.

And not because the state lacks arguments, but because those who live in “La Chingada” have plenty of reasons.

The project, which is still in the evaluation phase, keeps Puebla competing with Sonora as a possible location. Both states offer attractive arguments, but the key lies in who manages to best sell their strengths. In this context, Roberto Campunano, official envoy of Olinia, has been touring Puebla territory to identify areas of opportunity that reinforce the state’s proposal.

This character did not come just to observe. His visit to the Technological Institute of Puebla made it clear that human capital and the work of Puebla researchers are strategic elements for the success of the project. If the knowledge and capabilities of this community can be integrated into the development of the prototypes, Olinia’s electric car could seriously compete in a global market led by giants such as Tesla and BYD.

But this is not just a bet on Puebla, but on the entire country. Regardless of where the plant is installed, the impact will be national. Technological innovation, the drive for qualified employment and the contribution to the development of the electric automotive industry are factors that will benefit Mexico as a whole.

Despite this, the question remains: what else does Puebla need to seal the deal? The conditions seem to be in place, but in a project of this magnitude, not only local talent or infrastructure matter, but also the weight of the political decisions and economic strategies offered to Olinia.

The question now is whether Puebla will be able to close its presentation to Olinia with a flourish or whether Sonora, with its proximity to the US market and its natural resources, will end up winning this race. The answer could define not only the course of the Puebla economy, but also that of electric mobility in Mexico.
