New Regulation in Chiapas for Foreign License Plates

6

It is common to see vehicles with license plates from other states in different states of Mexico, and especially in Mexico City. This happens for various reasons: because the drivers live in another state, are visiting, have recently moved and have not yet changed their license plates, or simply to avoid paying property taxes. In Mexico City, it is common to find cars with license plates from the State of Mexico or Morelos, which, due to high demand, can cause delays in vehicle procedures.

New regulation in Chiapas for foreign license plates

The Government of Mexico is implementing new protocols to avoid this practice. In Chiapas, measures have been presented that will sanction drivers who drive with license plates from another state if they are residents of the entity.

According to information provided by Chiapas authorities at a press conference, starting in 2025, fines and restrictions will be applied to those vehicles that do not carry local license plates, as long as the owner resides in the state.

What will the sanctions be?

So far, the exact costs and specific guidelines for the protocols or sanctions have not been disclosed. However, it is expected that in the coming days the measures to ensure that residents of Chiapas do not drive with license plates from other entities will be detailed. The main objective is to regulate vehicle circulation within the state.

Why is this regulation being implemented?

The Government of Chiapas has launched a vehicle re-registration program, which will come into effect in February 2025. What is positive about this? All those who exchange their license plates will not have any outstanding vehicle registration fees, fines or surcharges from previous years. This strategy has been called by the authorities as a “clean slate.”

With this new regulation, residents of Chiapas must carry local license plates to avoid fines and restrictions, while visitors and tourists will be able to drive with license plates from other states without any problem. It is recommended to be attentive to the official publication of the guidelines to avoid unnecessary sanctions.
