Organ and Early Music Festival in Oaxaca

With concerts and guided tours, the Institute of Historical Organs of Oaxaca (IOHIO) will celebrate 25 years of its foundation, in order to protect, preserve, document and promote the ancient pipe organs in the state.

The program and the fifteenth edition of the International Organ and Early Music Festival includes a series of concerts with sacred music, classical music and regional music.

On February 5, 2000, 25 years ago, we offered the first concert in Tlacochahuaya. Since then, the project has been growing and promoting organ music and its environment,” said Cecilia Winter, organist, director of the IOHIO and promoter of the Festival.

CELEBRATION FROM FEBRUARY 5 TO 10

The celebration will be held from February 5 to 10 and will bring together artists such as James O’Donnell, (Scotland); Luca Scandali, (Italy); Horacio Franco, (Mexico); Cecilia Winter (Mexico). José Suárez, (Mexico) and Valentín Hernández, (Mexico).

Winter said that this program includes tours to the different communities of Oaxaca to see the organs that are currently working, and those that are in the process of restoration.

The performances will be at the Minor Basilica of the Virgin of Solitude; in the Cathedral of Oaxaca, in addition to the temples of San Andrés Zautla, San Matías Jalatlaco, Santo Domingo Yanhuitlán, Tamazulapan, San Jerónimo Tlacochahuaya and Tlacolula, places of worship that have historical instruments in their possession.

All concerts will be free, with the exception of the one that will be presented at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Oaxaca, on February 7, which will have a recovery fee of 100 pesos. It should be noted that the donation will be used to support the scholarships offered to national and international organ students.

OAXACAN JEWEL

The historic organ of the Oaxaca Cathedral is an instrument that was built in 1712 with pipes from an organ from 1570.
