Shortly before 9:00 a.m. this Saturday, two armed men waited for Román Valentín Ramírez Cornejo, a police officer from the Salamanca Municipal Police, to leave his house to shoot him. He is the fourth officer killed in Guanajuato so far in 2025.

Neighbors of the Olimpo neighborhood said that the victim left his house and was walking down Venus Street when his attackers, on a motorcycle, began to chase him and shot him before fleeing at full speed.

The shots alerted the other neighbors, who immediately called the emergency services, however, when the paramedics arrived to provide assistance to the officer, they could only confirm that he no longer had vital signs.

“The incident occurred when our colleague was heading to the security facilities to start his work day (…) A joint operation has been implemented with the National Defense Secretariat, the National Guard and the State Public Security Force in order to locate and arrest those responsible,” said César Prieto Gallardo, mayor of Salamanca.

Regarding the identity of the victim, this was confirmed by the local government, who regretted the crime and specified that the murdered police officer was in charge of the canine unit, was 40 years old and had extensive experience in security issues in Guanajuato.

With the murder of officer Román Valentín Ramírez Cornejo, Guanajuato equaled Sinaloa and the State of Mexico as the second entity with the most crimes committed against police officers; the three states have 5 victims, only behind the intentional homicides of 7 uniformed officers in the state of Oaxaca. At the national level, the number has already increased to 42 victims.

However, it cannot be forgotten that during 2023 and 2024 Guanajuato was consolidated as the most dangerous entity for police officers. Of the 732 officers killed in those two years – according to information collected by the organization Causa en Común – 121 victims were killed in Guanajuato.

In the counts by Causa en Común (from 2018 to 2025), only during the year 2022 Guanajuato did not top the list of states with the most police officers killed; the place was occupied by Zacatecas with 60 victims compared to Guanajuato’s 50.

Since 2018, the number of police officers killed in Guanajuato is 448; the most violent year was 2020, when 84 uniformed officers died from attacks by hitmen or during confrontations with criminal groups.
