Sheinbaum downplays the impact of Ecuadorian tariffs: “We can replace their products”

President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo dismissed the Ecuadorian government’s threat to impose 27% tariffs on Mexican exports, saying that trade between the two countries is minimal and that Ecuadorian products can be replaced by local goods.

“Yesterday I asked how much we import (from Ecuador), I think it’s 0.4 (percent). I’ll answer you with that,” Sheinbaum said during her morning press conference, downplaying the measure. She also compared one of Ecuador’s most representative products with national products: “Shrimp from Sinaloa is tastier than shrimp from Ecuador, to be honest,” she said.

Tensions between Mexico and Ecuador have increased since the assault on the Mexican embassy in Quito last year, which led to the breaking of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Currently, the dispute is still in legal proceedings before the International Court of Justice.

Despite the friction, the president did not go into the matter in depth and made it clear that the impact of the Ecuadorian measures on the Mexican economy is insignificant.
