A dead whale was discovered on Palmarito Beach in the Bajos de Chila jurisdiction, within the municipality of San Pedro Mixtepec.
On Tuesday, residents reported finding the stranded whale. Personnel from the State Coordination of Civil Protection and Risk Management (CEPCyGR) and the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) arrived to conduct investigations.
Esteban Vásquez, regional delegate of the CEPCyGR, identified the whale as a 5-meter-long female calf, estimated to be between three and five months old. The whale likely died early in the morning from natural causes.
“It may have separated from its mother, lost control, and washed up here,” Vásquez explained.
To prevent contamination risks for residents and visitors, the whale was buried in the sand with the aid of machinery.
This tragic discovery highlights the ongoing challenges faced by marine wildlife and the importance of monitoring and protecting these majestic creatures.
