Tulum Approves 400 Golf Carts for Transportation, Sparking Taxi Driver Opposition

The state congress has approved a request from the Quintana Roo Mobility Institute (Imoveqroo) to allow up to 400 golf carts to operate as transportation in Tulum, leading to divided opinions.

Approval and Allocations

On January 28, the state congress granted 400 concessions to four private companies:

– CMX Logistic Center S.A. de C.V.: 30 concessions

– Inmomercaqroo S.A. de C.V.: 90 concessions

– Metromobility Group S.A. de C.V.: 112 concessions

– Roasteryc S.A. de C.V.: 168 concessions

These companies can operate golf carts in various areas of Tulum, not just the coastal region and designated areas like Jaguar Park. This decision has caused discontent among the taxi union, known as Tiburones del Caribe, which currently provides transportation services in the town center.

The taxi union argues that the new golf cart units do not adhere to the same conditions, such as procedures, regulations, operating expenses, and rates. On the other hand, business owners and residents believe golf carts could be a good alternative to improve mobility, though their efficiency is yet to be proven.

According to the Quintana Roo Mobility Law and its regulations, this public transportation service must meet specific requirements and technical specifications. The golf carts must be open-type vehicles, capable of transporting between two and six passengers, including the driver. The models must be no more than five years old and environmentally friendly, whether they run on gasoline, hybrid, or electric power.

Authorities have positively assessed the Tulum Blindaje program, considering it effective in managing large crowds during electronic music festivals.
