On Tuesday afternoon, it was reported that more than a dozen explosives used by drug trafficking groups that are involved in a war for criminal control of Michoacán were seized.
In a statement from the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP) of Michoacán, it was reported that together with personnel from the Navy, they located an explosive device that was dropped from a drone over the El Águila ranch in the municipality of Tumbiscatío.
This is the third explosive found in a week, so trained personnel were required to proceed with its controlled detonation in order to avoid a greater risk to the inhabitants of the region.
According to the SSP, a security operation is maintained in the sites marked as red spots due to the permanent presence of criminal groups, mainly located in the Tierra Caliente region.
In another similar event, Navy and SSP personnel seized a box with 12 homemade explosives that were located during patrols in the municipality of Buenavista Tomatlán.
When they were over the community of Razo del Órgano, the security elements found a suspicious box abandoned on a dirt road, so when inspecting it they realized that it was full of explosives conditioned to be dropped from the air.
Federal sources have reported that so far this year 163 explosive devices used by criminal groups in their drug war for Michoacán have been seized; however, some of them have detonated and caused the death of civilians not involved in the cartel dispute.
It is worth remembering that in recent months there have been several incidents with narco-mines placed in different municipalities of Michoacán and that caused the death of a child laborer, a peasant, a rural teacher and four elements of the National Defense Secretariat (Defense) lost their lives.
The two most recent cases are those of José “N” and Pablo “N” (15 years old), two day laborers who died when they accidentally activated the detonation mechanism of a narcomine in the community of Santa Ana Amatlán, in an act that has been described by activists Adrián LeBarón Soto and Bryan LeBarón Jones as acts of terrorism, for which they filed a formal complaint with the Attorney General’s Office (FGR).
It is necessary to mention that Michoacán is a key state for Mexican drug trafficking, mainly due to the Port of Lázaro Cárdenas and the constant onslaught of the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG) to attack local groups such as Los Viagras – with whom they already have an alliance -, the Blancos de Troya, the Zicuirán Cartel and Los Caballeros Templarios.
