A group of citizens from San Miguel went to Mexico City on Tuesday to deliver a document to the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, requesting her urgent intervention to resolve the problem of the water lily that seriously affects the Allende dam.
The water lily, an invasive plant, has covered large areas of the dam, causing serious ecological and economic damage. The uncontrolled proliferation of this species has reduced the water storage capacity, affecting biodiversity and hindering fishing and tourism activities in the area. Despite multiple calls from citizens and some local attempts at removal, the problem remains unresolved definitively.
“We came to deliver a document to Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum, president of the United Mexican States, because it is urgent that they resolve the problem of the lily in the Allende dam once and for all,” said the citizens who went to the National Palace to the citizen service office, where they hope that this will be the beginning of a real solution.
The document presented exposes the seriousness of the problem and requests coordinated action between the federal, state and municipal governments to effectively address it. It details the negative effects of the water lily, which affects the economic activity of the communities that depend on the dam, since several people are dedicated to fishing.
This investment seeks to contain the growth of the water lily and protect the water and the tourist attraction of the area.
In addition, the citizens urged the government of the state of Guanajuato and the City Council of San Miguel de Allende to join the efforts to mitigate this environmental problem. They highlighted the need to implement sustainable solutions.
The Allende dam is a vital water resource for the region, and its deterioration affects not only the environment, but also key sectors such as agriculture, livestock and tourism. The people of San Miguel hope that with this request a concrete and prompt response will be achieved by the federal government, putting an end to a problem that has been without an effective solution for years.
