Fuel tanker overturns and explodes; Mexico-Veracruz highway closed

A tanker truck exploded on the Mexico-Veracruz highway in the municipality of Hueyotlipan, Tlaxcala, leaving a preliminary death toll of one and one injury, according to the state Civil Protection coordinator, Juvencio Nieto Galicia.

The truck caught fire and loud explosions were reported, bringing traffic to a standstill in both directions. Emergency services responded to the scene. The fire has been brought under control, but security measures remain in place and the highway is closed to mitigate risks.

The State Civil Protection Coordination (CEPC) deployed an inter-agency operation in coordination with the State Secretariat of Citizen Security (SCC).

The Fire Department, along with pre-hospital care services and authorities from all three levels of government, participated in the emergency response.

What is known about the tanker truck accident in Tlaxcala? A video shared on social media shows the driver of a tanker truck losing control while rounding a curve, causing the container to detach and spill into the oncoming lane.

Moments later, gas can be seen escaping from the vehicle. A car managed to pass through the white cloud before the tanker was engulfed in flames.

Lorena Cuéllar, the state governor, reported that she has ordered the establishment of a Permanent Security Task Force at the C5i command center to monitor the accident.

“From the very first moment, the emergency protocols were activated and a coordinated operation was deployed between authorities from all three levels of government. Our priority is to protect the safety of the population, address the emergency, and provide all the necessary conditions for emergency responders to carry out their work safely,” the state governor wrote in X.

To avoid the section of the Mexico-Veracruz highway that passes through Hueyotlipan, one of the best alternatives is to take the Mexico-Puebla highway (150D) and continue through Acatzingo, Esperanza, Orizaba, and Córdoba.

Another option is to travel the Mexico-Pachuca-Tuxpan-Veracruz route, passing through Pachuca, Tulancingo, Nuevo Necaxa, Tihuatlán, and Cardel.

This route crosses the Sierra Norte region of Puebla, so it has more curves.

If your destination is Xalapa or the port of Veracruz, you can also detour from Puebla towards Perote and continue through Xalapa. This alternative avoids passing through Hueyotlipan and allows you to enter the state of Veracruz at a different point.
