Yesterday was February 14, a date that celebrates the union of couples, as it is Valentine’s Day, but which also presents the opportunity to learn about other damages to marriages; for example, those that end in divorce.
In Mexico, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), 163,587 divorces were registered during 2023. This represented a decrease of 1.9% compared to 2022. Of the total divorces, 10.0% were resolved administratively and 90.0% judicially.
The figure has greater significance when compared to the 501,529 marriages that were celebrated that same year. That is, for every ten couples who got married, just over three got divorced.
In addition, Inegi also announced that the main causes of divorce, the reasons expressed to dissolve the marriage bond, in accordance with the provisions of the Civil Code of the corresponding federal entity, were:
Uncaused divorce, with 67.5 percent
Mutual consent, with 31.1 percent
Separation from the marital home for more than one year, with or without justified cause, with 0.7 percent
The cause for mutual consent applies to both administrative and judicial divorces. In 24 federal entities, the main cause was uncaused divorce and in the remaining 8 entities, mutual consent.
The states with the highest divorce rates per thousand inhabitants aged 18 and over were:
Campeche, with 4.8
Nuevo León, with 3.7
Aguascalientes, with 3.4
The lowest rates were in:
Veracruz, with 0.8
Puebla, with 1.0
Oaxaca, with 1.1
