Pirates Attack Pemex Platform in Campeche: A 21st Century Assault

In a shocking incident that has raised concerns about safety in the oil industry, pirates assaulted a Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) platform in Campeche on Thursday night. According to José Guadalupe Rueda Nava, president of the Local Surveillance Council of Section 47 in Ciudad del Carmen, the attackers boarded the marine platform around 8:30-9:00 p.m., threatening two workers who were on duty.

This incident is part of a disturbing trend that has been increasing in recent years. Rueda Nava pointed out that the situation – of assaults by “pirates” – is becoming more common and recurrent on offshore platforms. The attackers, armed with guns, beat two workers and locked them in the control room for over five hours, under threat.

The president of the council called on Pemex and Navy authorities to implement a protocol to safeguard the safety of workers and facilities. He stressed that there is usually no security on satellite platforms, and even in larger complexes, there is only one security personnel.

An investigation into the incident is currently underway. According to Victor Hernandez Colunga, leader of section 47 of the Union of Oil Workers of the Mexican Republic (STPRM), an armed group took control of the Zaap Delta oil platform, part of the Ku-Maloob-Zaap complex. The attackers robbed the workers and physically assaulted them.

The situation on Pemex’s offshore platform is concerning, with reports of attacks by “pirates” becoming more frequent. Rueda Nava emphasized that this is not just a matter of robbery but also a threat to the safety of workers and facilities. The incident highlights the need for improved security measures in the oil industry.
