On March 8, more than 1,200 women from organized society and various groups will march through the main streets of San Juan del Río to commemorate International Women’s Day. Under the motto “We cultivate dignity, we harvest freedom.”
The participants will seek to raise their voices in favor of equality, justice and security for all women. Likewise, at the end of the tour, various activities will take place, including a performance and several cultural interventions.
What will be the meeting point for 8M in San Juan del Río?
The meeting point will be outside Las Garzas Park, in the eastern part of the municipality. The march will begin at 4:30 p.m., going along Moctezuma Street until reaching Avenida Central, where the first hydration stop will be made. Later, the protesters will advance along Avenida Benito Juárez, from east to west, until reaching the Benito Juárez Market, the site of the second hydration stop.
The march will end at the Jardín Independencia, located on Miguel Hidalgo Street, around 6:00 p.m.
Paulina Hurtado, a member of the Somos Lilas collective, explained that this year the march takes on a special meaning after the recent femicide of Perla Citlali, whose case has shocked the community. Hurtado said that they expect greater participation from women, as well as family and friends of the victim, as a show of solidarity and rejection of gender violence.
In addition, she mentioned that a meeting was held with the Municipal Government Secretariat to coordinate aspects related to security during the event.
