Early Tuesday morning, the tariffs announced by the United States government came into effect, which establish a 25% tax on imports from Mexico and Canada.
Specialists on the subject point out that this measure will have serious consequences for Baja California Sur, especially for tourism in the municipality of Los Cabos, which is gradually growing and with construction projects by hotel investors. Recently, Los Cabos was recognized as the most welcoming destination in Mexico.
How will the United States tariffs affect the municipality of Los Cabos?
Today, Tuesday, the tariffs imposed on imports from Mexico and Canada by the United States came into effect.
Adriana Marcel Carrillo, treasurer of the Employers’ Confederation of the Mexican Republic (COPARMEX) Los Cabos, mentioned that, although Mexico mainly exports accessories and vehicle parts, computer equipment, among others, to the United States, if these items are no longer exported, the gross domestic product and the commercial sector will be diminished.
Marcel Carrillo pointed out that in the case of the municipality of Los Cabos, due to its proximity to this country and being the natural niche market that visits us, the tertiary sector and service providers will be affected first.
This, since the economic capacity of the United States – the main issuer of tourists to the destination – its economy will be diminished and this in turn would limit their trips; those who visit Los Cabos will be more cautious in their spending when vacationing to enjoy the beaches and natural resources that exist in the area.
What are tariffs and how do they work?
Tariffs are the rights or taxes that a country imposes, both for importing and exporting, that makes it possible to measure the internal flow of products in some way and avoid all those exports.
In Mexico there are seven Mexican shopping centers where you can support the local economy.
What other sectors will be affected by the tariffs announced by the United States?
Another of the sectors that Marcel Carrillo mentions will be affected is infrastructure, since with these tariffs, construction investment in Los Cabos could decrease, especially from the private sector, which will result in a stagnation in the economic flow of the municipality.
Finally, he mentioned that in order to reduce the negative effects of this situation, Los Cabos must diversify its market and offer more options, and make the destination more attractive with other types of experiences.
