“Daddy, they hit me, I have blood,” were the last words of little Alana, a girl from San Miguel de Allende who died after being shot during an armed confrontation between private citizens and members of the Guanajuato State Attorney General’s Office.
The confrontation stemmed from an attempt to serve an arrest warrant against her father, Alan, for the alleged attempted femicide of his sister. The family is asking that Alana’s death be investigated as a femicide.
At a press conference, Marian Paulina Almanza, mother of little Alana, who would have turned 9 on Thursday, March 13, along with attorney Pablo González Sierra, demanded justice for her death and an investigation into the actions of the Guanajuato Attorney General’s Office officers. In her view, the operation was carried out negligently. The shooting occurred without regard for the fact that her two daughters were in the back of the SUV in which Alan was traveling with his driver, as he was going to take them to school.
“Today, my beloved daughter Alana is not with me because she was shot. She was the victim of a femicide, a cowardly femicide, while her father was taking her and her sister to school. My other daughter, Oriana, is terrified and afraid to get into a vehicle because she feels like they’re going to attack her again and that they’re going to be shot. She can’t believe that her sister won’t be here tomorrow for her birthday. That’s why I ask and beg President Claudia Sheinbaum to help me achieve justice for my daughter so that what happened isn’t left unchecked. Because of false accusations, my husband can’t be with us today with his daughter, whom he loved so much,” explained the minor’s mother.
According to the family’s account, while they were traveling near “El Cortijo” in San Miguel de Allende, a sedan with tinted windows followed them, caught up with them, and men in civilian clothes got out. They stood in front of them, pointed their weapons, and fired, fatally wounding Alana. Since the men allegedly never identified themselves, the family believed they were members of a criminal group, so they also fired.
“At one point, Mr. Alan, who was in the driver’s seat, heard some banging on the back of his truck, and up until that moment, he didn’t know who was behind him. When his daughter said, “Daddy, they hit me, I’m bleeding,” he turned around and told his driver: “Let’s go to the hospital.” They rushed to La Joya Hospital, stopped there, and put the girl in their arms to carry a stretcher for her. Up until that moment, they didn’t know that the people chasing them were investigative agents,” explained Pablo González Sierra, a victim’s counselor.
He explained that the family had already received death threats and extortion attempts against them, so they had a firearm for protection. Reports of these incidents are recorded in investigation files that were opened.
Regarding the arrest warrant against Alana’s father, Mr. Alan, they explained that the accusations of attempted femicide were unfounded and were false reports. They have evidence from surveillance videos from a sports club in Querétaro that he was on the premises when the attempted femicide of his sister occurred.
The lawyer also specified that the arrest warrant had been issued on Sunday, March 9, and that the accused and his lawyers had appeared before the Prosecutor’s Office to file a complaint for falsifying allegations and false attribution of evidence, but that he was not arrested at that time.
Due to these events, the family is requesting sanctions against the FGE officers who participated in the operation. They have also requested the intervention of President Sheinbaum and the Federal Secretary of Security, Omar García Harfuch, as they fear the local authorities.
