José Barajas Mejía resigned as Attorney General of the State of Tabasco after five months in office. During his tenure, he faced threats from criminal groups, who left messages on banners and posters.
Governor Javier May Rodríguez confirmed the resignation and stated that Barajas Mejía decided to leave the post to pursue his military career.
During his tenure, the prosecutor was in charge of investigating various massacres that occurred in bars in Villahermosa and other municipalities. These incidents include the attack on the “DBar” nightclub, which left six dead, and the shooting at the “Casita Azul” bar, which left seven dead.
He also coordinated intelligence efforts with the federal government, which led to the capture of members of the criminal groups La Barredora and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). His departure coincides with the recent arrest of “Guasón.”
Prosecutor José Barajas Mejía leaves office amid a violence crisis in Tabasco, which, while slightly reduced, still sees intentional homicides occurring almost daily in the state.
Tabasco Prosecutor Hands Resignation to Governor Javier May
Through social media, Governor Javier May Rodríguez reported that, during the Security Coordination Board meeting in Tenosique, José Barajas informed him of his decision to submit his resignation to the State Congress.
The state governor thanked the prosecutor for his work and wished him success in his career. He also announced that the Deputy Prosecutor for Common Crimes, Óscar Tonathiu Vázquez Landeros, will temporarily assume the position of head of the FGE as head of office.
In accordance with the legal framework, the state government will begin the process to appoint the new head of the Tabasco Attorney General’s Office.
It’s worth remembering that on February 17, Barajas Mejía downplayed the threats that appeared on banners against him, arguing that they were not direct attacks against him, but rather against the institution he led.
At the time, he attributed the warnings to the desperation of criminal groups over the results of recent investigations and arrests.
At the time, he rejected reports of a possible resignation, asserting that he would only leave office “when the people of Tabasco so decide.”
However, in recent weeks, it was reported that Barajas was no longer showing up for office, fueling rumors about his imminent departure, which finally materialized this Monday.
