President Claudia Sheinbaum recognized her US counterpart, Donald Trump, for having promoted the Mexican government’s campaign against fentanyl use through his social media.
On the morning of Sunday, April 6, President Trump shared two videos on his Truth Social profile. They were a pair of audiovisual clips that are part of the “Stay away from drugs. Fentanyl kills you” campaign, which aims to prevent opioid use among young people and adolescents.
The videos shared by Trump are 30 seconds long and are the same ones produced by the Mexican government, with the only difference being that they have English subtitles. Both show a contrast between young people who use the synthetic opioid and those who do not.
“Fentanyl kills. It destroys your brain, lungs, and heart. True friends take care of you and give you life. Stay away from drugs, choose to be happy. If you need help, call the ‘lifeline’: 800 911 2000,” reads the first video uploaded to Truth Social.
Given this, Claudia Sheinbaum described Donald Trump’s use of his social media platform to showcase the Mexican campaign as a positive development. In her morning press conference this Monday, the federal leader acknowledged being surprised by such an action.
“I want to take this opportunity to say that I was surprised that President Donald Trump posted the campaign we are running in Mexico on his social media yesterday,” she noted.
She explained that the anti-fentanyl campaign was shared with the US president about a week ago. “It’s good because it’s being promoted all over the world. Many people around the world see President Trump’s social media.” And the campaign was launched just like that,” Sheinbaum stated.
She added that this was a “sign of recognition” from the US to address the root causes of “drug addiction” or drug use.
This campaign was publicly presented on January 7 of this year, with two main pillars: prevention—with the participation of the Ministries of Public Education (SEP) and Culture—and care, supported by the health sector.
The SEP implemented the so-called “classroom strategy” with the aim of holding educational sessions in secondary and high schools to prevent drug use. Additionally, the “lifeline” (800 911 2000) was enabled to provide citizen support 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
