Violence in the Port of Acapulco, Guerrero, continues unabated even during the Easter holidays. A public transport van was set on fire Friday morning, and a peasant leader was shot that evening.
According to local media, armed individuals stole and burned an Urvan van on the San Isidro-Centro de Acapulco route.
Organized crime attacks against transporters are becoming more frequent. On Tuesday, April 15, two taxi drivers were murdered. Two more drivers were attacked in the following two days, while the same number of Urvan passenger vans were set on fire.
According to Proceso magazine, 17 murders were recorded in this tourist destination from Monday to Thursday. The media outlet reported that there have been 27 murders of taxi and van drivers so far in 2025.
Meanwhile, on the afternoon of April 18, Marco Antonio Suástegui Muñoz, activist and spokesperson for the Council of Ejidos and Communities Opposed to the La Parota Dam (Cecop), was shot on a beach in Acapulco, Guerrero.
According to initial reports, the incident occurred in the Mallorca condominium, near Icacos Beach.
Local media reported that the member of the United Tourists in Defense of Icacoc Beach (TUDERPI) association was taken under heavy security to a hospital for medical attention.
The Guerrero State Attorney General’s Office (FGE Guerrero) reported that it has opened an investigation into the attack against Marco Antonio “N” in the Icacos neighborhood of the port of Acapulco.
“Members of the Ministerial Investigative Police are carrying out the initial investigations, including locating and interviewing potential witnesses, as well as searching for public and private video surveillance cameras that may have recorded the events,” the local Public Prosecutor’s Office stated, without disclosing details of the activist’s health.
Acapulco Mayor Abelina López Rodríguez avoided speaking about the violence in the city last Wednesday, simply inviting the public to participate in the traditional Acapulco Jolgorio parade on April 16.
“I’m going to talk about the Jolgorio, come and have fun,” the mayor said when asked by reporters about the wave of violence in the city.
