San Juan de Abajo wants to shine again!

Councilwoman Elizabeth Rico Fregoso reported that, in coordination with the municipal building committees and agencies such as Economic Development, they are working on a project to reactivate primary economic activity in San Juan de Abajo.

The objective is to boost livestock and agriculture, activities that have historically made this town the economic heart of Bahía de Banderas since its founding. To this end, support will be sought from the State and Federal Governments to prevent these sectors from continuing to be neglected in the face of growing tourism and the real estate sector.

The plan is to promote primary activities through economic incentives, tools, and in-kind supplies.

It is worth noting that San Juan de Abajo is known as the watermelon capital, thanks to the production of this export-quality fruit that reaches as far away as the United States. Corn, beans, tobacco, tomatoes, and other vegetables are also grown here, and a portion of the population is dedicated to livestock farming, a sector that is also showing steady growth.

Despite its more than 200 years of history as an economic hub, San Juan de Abajo remains a key supply point for mountain towns like El Colomo and Coatante. It also has a vibrant gastronomic sector, with taco shops, cenadurías, and festivals that residents seek to transform into cultural heritage.

Rico Fregoso emphasized that it is essential to continue promoting this primary economy, which not only represents history but also a solid development alternative for future generations.
