Airbnb announces that travelers can now spread payments for reservations on the platform for up to three interest-free monthly installments using participating credit cards*.
This new feature comes at a strategic time, offering financial flexibility to those looking to secure their accommodations in Mexico with an additional payment option.
Until now, the platform in Mexico allowed reservations to be paid for using credit cards, debit cards, and gift cards. With this addition, those paying with participating credit cards can distribute the cost of eligible reservations over up to three payments, provided the currency selected for the final transaction is the Mexican peso (MXN) and the applicable terms and conditions are met.
“Mexico is experiencing a historic moment in global tourism, driven by sustained growth in the desire of Mexicans to explore their own country and abroad. We believe that the introduction of interest-free installments is a fundamental step in democratizing travel, an additional alternative to offer travelers greater payment flexibility and adapt to local consumption habits,” said Ángel Terral, Airbnb Director for Mexico and the Caribbean.
However, it’s important to note that this payment option is designed exclusively for standard reservations. Therefore, interest-free installments will not apply in the following cases:
This option reflects a deeply rooted financial culture in the country, where the strategic use of credit is fundamental for the average consumer. According to reports from the National Commission for the Protection and Defense of Financial Services Users (CONDUSEF) and the Mexican Online Sales Association (AMVO)2, financial benefits such as interest-free installments or cashback are considered by more than 50% of Mexican internet users.
Likewise, data from the Bank of Mexico indicates that approximately 59% of credit card users in the country are “total-paying” customers who settle their balance each month to avoid late fees3. For this segment, the interest-free installment plan represents a very attractive alternative for planning trips in a planned and informed way.
The addition of Interest-Free Installments is a new payment option available on the platform, alongside the “Book Now, Pay Later” option—which allows you to secure accommodations with moderate or flexible cancellation policies without paying anything upfront. The Interest-Free Installments option is applied at the time of payment and requires the use of participating credit cards. Both options are independent of each other, but together they expand travelers’ possibilities for managing and enjoying each trip from the very beginning.
