Motorcyclists crossing the border from Tijuana to San Diego will soon have an exclusive lane.
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced Thursday that an exclusive motorcycle lane will be available at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, operating on specific days and during specific hours.
Starting Tuesday, motorcyclists traveling to San Diego between 4:00 and 10:00 a.m., Monday through Friday, will be required to use Lane 15.
The implementation of this exclusive lane seeks to “improve traffic flow and increase operational efficiency for travelers,” CBP said.
The agency indicated that the motorcycle lane will also improve “the overall processing experience for those entering the United States.”
Currently, many motorcyclists take advantage of the smaller size of their vehicles to ride between cars and move toward the front of the line, allowing them to cross more quickly and, in some cases, reducing waits of several hours to just a few minutes.
The San Ysidro Port of Entry is one of the busiest international border crossings in the world; every day, tens of thousands of vehicles and pedestrians cross the border between the United States and Mexico.
Each day, up to 34 vehicle lanes are opened for travelers crossing from Tijuana to San Diego, including dedicated lanes for verified travelers, others for U.S. citizens and residents who have specific documentation, and additional lanes for other travelers.
The San Diego-Tijuana border region has tens of thousands of people who cross the border every day to work, study, or simply visit as part of their cross-border lives.
