What began as a celebration of the Mexican National Soccer Team’s victory over the Czech Republic in the 2026 World Cup turned into a medical emergency in Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur.

Around 9:05 PM, a vehicle struck a group of fans gathered at the intersection of Lázaro Cárdenas Boulevard and Marina Boulevard—major thoroughfares in the tourist district.

According to official reports and videos circulated on social media, the driver was surrounded by a crowd that was blocking the flow of traffic.

Allegedly, under the physical pressure the crowd was exerting on his vehicle, the driver suddenly accelerated, striking several people before crashing into a traffic sign a short distance away.

Witnesses reported that after the collision, some bystanders pulled the driver from the car and physically assaulted him before authorities could secure the area.

CASUALTY COUNT AND MEDICAL RESPONSE

The Los Cabos municipal government confirmed that 17 people were injured in the incident. The emergency response involved the Fire Department, Civil Protection, and Public Security, who coordinated the transport of the injured to various hospitals:

  • IMSS General Hospital (Zone No. 26): 10 patients (8 women and 2 men).
  • Cabo San Lucas General Hospital: 3 people.
  • San Luke’s Hospital: 2 people.
  • AMC Hospital: 1 person.
  • Emergency status: One patient remains under specialized care due to the severity of their injuries.

LEGAL STATUS AND INVESTIGATION

The driver involved was arrested at the scene; after receiving medical attention for injuries sustained during the assault, he was handed over to the Public Prosecutor’s Office to determine his legal status.

Meanwhile, the Mexican Football Federation issued a statement expressing solidarity with the victims and their families, stating its confidence that the competent authorities would clarify the facts of the incident.
