OCTAVIO SANDOVAL, PRESIDENT OF THE BAJA CALIFORNIA BUSINESS COORDINATING COUNCIL (CCE), ANNOUNCED VARIOUS MEASURES AUTHORITIES COULD IMPLEMENT TO EXPEDITE THE RETURN FROM THE UNITED STATES TO MEXICO, ADDRESSING A PROBLEM THAT HAS BEEN ESCALATING.

The private sector in Mexicali demanded that state and federal authorities speed up crossings from the United States into Mexico at the ports of entry in Tijuana, Tecate, and the Baja California capital.

Octavio Sandoval, president of the Baja California Business Coordinating Council, pointed out a persistent issue directly affecting Mexican citizens who work or travel for tourism in the neighboring country. Since the start of 2026, wait times to return to Mexico have exceeded two hours—a situation he described as unjust. He proposed, among other measures, redesigning the customs facilities and streamlining the inspections conducted there.

“On average, it is taking more than two or three hours to return from the United States to Mexico, and this is unfair; we are not accustomed—nor will we ever get used—to waiting in lines to cross from the U.S. into Mexico. Customs authorities have the power to redesign the ports of entry, as the current infrastructure did not account for the volume of vehicle traffic during these peak times (Thursday through Sunday).”

Meanwhile, César Beltrán, president of CANACO Mexicali, noted that this issue has already impacted the public and the commercial sector. Consequently, they are backing the Business Coordinating Council’s proposal, hoping that—with business sector support—authorities will address the situation, which has led to longer wait times for returning to Mexico.

Finally, both leaders called upon federal deputies and senators to intervene in a matter that truly affects the people of Baja California. They urged officials to focus on serving the public rather than merely pursuing their own political futures—a trend recently observed as various federal officials have requested leaves of absence to seek candidacies in the upcoming election cycle.
