Baja California ranks fourth among the 32 states in the country in the number of vehicles stolen during the first 22 months of the current federal administration.
Between October 2024 and July 2026, the state recorded 15,008 stolen vehicles, according to the report “The War in Numbers: Vehicle Theft in Mexico,” prepared by TResearch International based on data from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP).
The figure places Baja California behind Puebla, with 18,972 cases, and Jalisco, with 17,940, and well behind the State of Mexico, which leads the national list with 38,159 stolen vehicles —2.5 times the number recorded in the northern border state—.
In fifth place is Sinaloa, with 10,832 cases, 4,176 fewer vehicles than Baja California.
With its 15,008 cases, Baja California accounts for 7.2% of the national total of 208,244 stolen vehicles recorded between October 2024 and July 2026 across the country’s 32 states.
The difference with the other Baja California
The comparison between the two states that make up the Baja California Peninsula shows a difference of 14,017 vehicles: while Baja California accumulated 15,008 thefts during the period, Baja California Sur recorded 991, a ratio of 15 to 1.
National trend as a reference
The report does not break down monthly figures by state, so it is not possible to determine whether Baja California’s trend follows the pattern observed nationwide.
At the national level, July 2026 ended with 7,877 stolen vehicles, a figure lower than the 9,721 cases recorded in July 2025.
From January through July 2026, 57,553 vehicle thefts were recorded in Mexico, below the 69,267 reported during the same period in 2025.
In the six-year administration comparison, the national average of vehicles stolen per day during the administration of Claudia Sheinbaum is 381, lower than the 409 daily thefts recorded during the administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador and the 475 recorded during the administration of Enrique Peña Nieto.
During Peña Nieto’s six-year term, 1,039,772 vehicles were stolen nationwide; during López Obrador’s administration, the figure was 871,816.
