With Sergio Salomón sworn in as the new head of the National Migration Institute (INM) on May 1, the Mexican Association of Incoming Tourism Agencies (AMATUR) will request an urgent meeting with this federal government official to discuss the need to improve entry processes for foreign visitors to Quintana Roo.
Sergio González Rubiera, president of Amatur, explained that they have given their vote of confidence to President Claudia Sheinbaum’s appointment of Salomón; however, it will be important to outline the actions that have been implemented to provide a better experience for tourists at the first entry point into the country.
“The important thing here is to recognize the importance of immigration procedures at the airports of Mexico’s tourist destinations, specifically at Cancún, which has the largest flow of foreigners nationwide,” González explained.
However, there is a high rate of complaints from denied visitors, including extortion attempts and mistreatment upon arrival. Therefore, the meeting will emphasize the issues currently facing Quintana Roo and that the sector has been requesting for years.
The changeover will take place on May 1, according to President Claudia Sheinbaum’s statement; the position has previously been held by Francisco Garduño. Sergio Salomón was governor of the central state of Puebla from 2022 to 2024 and a local representative in that state; he will now take over as Commissioner (director general) of the National Institute of Migration.
González Rubiera explained that in the meeting they had weeks ago with Josefina Rodríguez, Secretary of Tourism in Mexico, the official informed them that the Immigration staff assigned to Cancún International Airport would be doubled and that INM officials would receive a salary increase. “Going from 12,000 pesos per month to 20,000 pesos will also prevent staff turnover at the destination’s terminals,” stated the national president of Amatur.
He recalled that one of the commitments they made at the Working Groups they hold in Quintana Roo with state and federal authorities is to provide training to Immigration and Customs officials.
As reported by REPORTUR.mx, Quintana Roo Senator Eugenio Segura recently announced that they would hold a meeting next May with Immigration and Customs authorities to discuss the issue of tourist entry, primarily from Colombia and Brazil. The meeting will be attended by hoteliers from the destination and Governor Mara Lezama.
