One of the EZLN leaders, Subcomandante Moisés, revealed during the meeting that members of the National Guard and the Pakal group (an elite unit conceived as a rapid reaction force to combat organized crime) patrolled the meeting venue and stood for several minutes in front of its main gate.

“Re(velarte)/Re(belarte),” created to strengthen ties between communities and collectives through art as a means of resistance, rebellion, and social transformation, held a session at the Indigenous Center for Comprehensive Training (CIDECI), located in San Cristóbal de las Casas, the capital city of Chiapas.

It invited everyone “who is against the capitalist, patriarchal, racist, discriminatory, and criminal system.”

“They were there and got out of their cars, listening or looking for something. Then they got back in their cars and went back again. We don’t know what they want, we don’t know what they’re looking for. We’re just reporting so you know, so you’re aware, that they’re harassing us in our activities—that’s what they told us. “We’re going to continue working,” Subcomandante Moisés denounced.

He asked the participants not to be afraid and to continue the exchange of ideas and experiences about autonomous organization, art, rebellion, and resistance as tools for social transformation.

The forum brought together social activists from around the world. According to local media, more than 500 Zapatistas and some 1,000 representatives of social organizations from various countries participated.

It was led by Moisés, but other subcommanders also participated, including Galeano, formerly known as Subcomandante Marcos, who played a key role in the creation and first steps of the EZLN in 1994.

Resistances

Last week, nearly 3,000 people attended Caracol VII Jacinto Canek in Winikton, Tenejapa municipality (central Chiapas), to participate in another debate, this time focusing on community art not as a hostage to commercialism but as a transformative tool. During 2025, the EZLN will be holding activities to commemorate its 31st anniversary.
