Within Mexico City’s Historic Center, considered the cultural, historical, and administrative heart of the capital, lies one of the oldest pulquerias in the country still operating.
Specifically, in the Cuautémoc district, very close to Plaza Garibaldi and near the Allende station on Metro Line 2, is the pulqueria La Antigua Roma, which has witnessed history for over 100 years.
The location is one of the most emblematic in the La Lagunilla neighborhood, having offered its visitors authentic Mexican cured meats and snacks over the years.

La Antigua Roma was established in the early 1990s, becoming a popular spot for both workers from different social classes and enthusiasts of Mexican culture.
During their heyday at the beginning of the 20th century, pulquerías represented important centers of cultural gathering and expression, decorated with distinctive themes and clever names.
With over a century of history, the La Antigua Roma pulquería has witnessed countless historical events, including the events of the Mexican Revolution. Its walls preserve anecdotes and experiences from former customers who visited it over four generations, remaining a landmark despite the constant changes in Mexico City.
Jorge López, the establishment’s owner, recounts that in its early days, there were strict social restrictions: women were not allowed to enter, and if they did, the pulquería could receive a hefty fine.
As a result of this situation, a space called the “ladies’ department” emerged, a space reserved exclusively for women within the establishment, separated from the main area as a way of respecting the norms of the time.
Despite urban and cultural transformations, La Antigua Roma remains a space that connects visitors with the traditions and customs surrounding pulque, keeping alive the legacy of the pulquerías of yesteryear in the Historic Center.
One of its main features is the traditional pulque brought from Tlaxcala, as well as the flavored curds: oatmeal, strawberry, guava, and even celery.
In addition to drinks, food is also an important part of the experience, although to complete the experience, there is also a jukebox that delights visitors with Mexican classics.
