Residents of Atasta, Campeche blocked the Frontera-Ciudad del Carmen Highway on Wednesday morning, protesting a prolonged power outage that left their community without electricity.
Citizens used makeshift barricades made of logs and branches to block the road, creating a significant traffic jam as vehicles were unable to pass. The protest, which drew National Guard personnel to the scene, was sparked by frustration over the ongoing power outage.
Following negotiations with the protesters, personnel from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) arrived to repair the issue, ultimately clearing the roadway and restoring access to the highway.
The blockade lasted for only a couple of hours, marking a significant decrease in duration compared to a previous 80-hour protest that took place in the area just weeks ago. During the earlier demonstration, residents demanded the construction of an electrical substation to address recurring power outages in the region.
While the current outage has been rectified, concerns over the reliability of the local electricity supply remain, and community leaders are calling for permanent solutions to prevent future disruptions.
