Gustavo Guerrero Velázquez, from the “Pro Mejorar del Agro Guanajuato” group, stated that the Tax Administration System facilities in Celaya had been occupied since Monday, but due to the lack of a favorable response from federal authorities, farmers blocked the agency’s offices in San Miguel de Allende, Irapuato, and León at dawn this Tuesday.
“We are farmers from the cities of Silao, Ciudad Manuel Doblado, Romita, León, Celaya, and Irapuato, primarily. We sought an appointment with the Tax Administration System staff, and they told us they wouldn’t pay us the wheat subsidy from 2023 to 2024 because the Treasury hadn’t sent them the money. That’s why we came to speak with the staff so they would talk to Mexico and send us our money,” said the representative of a group of farmers.
He explained that they have also been stripped of subsidies by the Federal Electricity Commission, and that grains like corn and wheat are being sold at 5 pesos per kilo, and that subsidy hasn’t arrived either.
“We’re bankrupt; we can’t survive with this. There are farmers with small plots of land who owe up to 800,000 pesos to the Electricity Commission. Even four years of planting can’t pay off those debts. Unfortunately, they’re denying subsidies to people who have their paperwork in order. They say many have expired concessions, and that’s a lie. They’re still valid, and they’re denying them support. Furthermore, the wheat guarantee isn’t being granted. With that, we’re lost. We’re not planting because we don’t have the money to invest,” said the Silao farmer leader.
