As part of the demonstrations held by students from the Mactumaczá Rural Teachers’ College in Chiapas on Thursday to support the teachers’ union, young people attempted to hijack a public transportation bus when state police arrived, triggering a chase.

According to the Secretary of Security, Óscar Aparicio Avendaño, police officers under his command arrived at the scene to prevent them from taking the bus, which caused the young people to escape at high speed in a vehicle.

Two police officers were with them “as hostages,” the Secretary of Security stated.

Near the city’s northern bypass, one of the young people fell from the vehicle.

A patrol car is behind them and manages to avoid the body; however, the student presumably dies as a result of the impact.

Regarding this, the secretary said it was “an accident caused by the irresponsibility of these individuals.”

For its part, the Minerva Bello Center released a statement stating that the young man, named Jesús N., “lost his life after suffering a skull fracture caused by an impact, which caused his fall, allegedly caused by Chiapas police officers.”

According to the center, the direct impact of a tear gas canister can cause serious and irreparable injuries, “as occurred in this case.” It also asserts that this is a case of “disproportionate use of force against the students of the Mactumaczá Rural Teachers’ College in Chiapas.”

They demanded that the competent authorities conduct a thorough and impartial investigation, that the corresponding responsibilities be determined, and that those responsible be punished according to the law.

That day, state police also arrested two students during the demonstrations.
