A group of ejidatarios from several towns in Yucatán gathered at the Mérida International Convention Center to raise their voices against land dispossession by businessmen and real estate developers. The protesters, who came from Kinchil, Ixil, Celestún, María Chi, Texán Palomeque, and Yaxkukul, expressed their frustration and concern over the impact of unchecked urban development on the peninsula’s flora.
The demonstration was part of the second forum “One Territory, Different Realities” of the Participatory Territorial Agenda Consultation organized by the Secretariat of Agrarian, Territorial, and Urban Development (Sedatu). The protesters called for the National Program for Territorial Planning and Urban Development 2025-2030 to be re-evaluated and focused on a more sustainable model that benefits communities, not businesses.
The ejidatarios explained that they have suffered greatly due to land dispossession by businessmen and real estate developers, which has led to the devastation of thousands of hectares of the Mayan jungle. They demanded that authorities regulate real estate developments and take action to stop the destruction of their lands and the environment.
The protesters also expressed their intention to participate in the working groups currently underway on territorial development, housing, mobility, public spaces, and agricultural issues. By participating in these groups, they hope to bring their concerns and ideas to the table and work towards finding solutions that benefit the communities and the environment.
The demonstration marked a significant moment for the ejidatarios of Yucatán, as they came together to demand action against land dispossession and advocate for a more sustainable model of urban development. Their voices will continue to be heard, and their efforts will undoubtedly shape the future of the peninsula’s territorial development.
