A growing number of neighborhoods in Mérida and Campeche are experiencing frequent and prolonged power outages, leaving residents without electricity, clean water, or basic services.
In southern Mérida, residents of the Zazil-Há and Cinco Colonias neighborhoods have been plagued by constant blackouts for two weeks, lasting several hours at a time. The situation has become so dire that they decided to close 50A Street, from 119th to 131st Street, in protest.
Residents claim that the power outages are causing them significant distress, as they are unable to sleep or use essential appliances due to frequent surges. Furthermore, the lack of electricity has also led to a disruption in water supply, leaving residents without access to this basic necessity.
The protesters warned that if the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) fails to respond and restore service, they will continue to block roads until their demands are met.
Meanwhile, CFE workers revealed that power outages during the hot season are inevitable due to overloaded connections in new subdivisions. They explained that their bosses have refused to authorize the construction of a substation to improve service, leaving residents without reliable electricity.
In Campeche city, residents of the Polvorín neighborhood demonstrated outside the CFE offices, demanding the immediate replacement of a faulty transformer that has left them without power for three days.
