In recent days, Baja California drivers have reported a wave of violent robberies on key stretches of the state’s highways. The situation has prompted authorities to issue an alert regarding this series of criminal acts.
On May 21, during the state security conference, General Laureano Carrillo Rodríguez, state security secretary, confirmed that the number of robberies has increased on certain roads in the state of Baja California.
On which Baja California highways has the increase in robberies been reported?
According to Carrillo Rodríguez, highway robberies have been reported in strategic areas of the state, where both residents and tourists travel. The highway sections most affected by this wave of robberies are:
Mexicali-San Felipe
Mexicali toward the border with Sonora
Tecate-Ensenada, especially in the Valle de Guadalupe
Authorities urge the public to avoid traveling through these areas at night or in low visibility conditions, and to report any incident or suspicious behavior.
Authorities are already taking security measures to combat highway robberies in Baja California
In response to this crisis, the official reported that coordinated operations have already been implemented between the National Guard and the State Highway Patrol, with strategic surveillance at identified hot spots.
“Yesterday I was with personnel from the National Highway Patrol, because we are already establishing an operation that also includes the State Highway Patrol, jointly with the National Guard, each working in their respective areas of responsibility. I want to tell you that we are already addressing this; we are collaborating significantly with the National Guard, and we are currently also in constant communication. An agreement will even be signed soon to establish border closures and prevent incidents on the highways,” said General Laureano Carrillo Rodríguez, Secretary of State Security.
In addition, the signing of an agreement was announced to reinforce the border crossings with Sonora and improve the inter-institutional response. The intention is to curb criminal activity and provide greater security for those traveling on Baja California’s highways.
