The state government will begin expansion work on the Nuevo Laredo International Bridge III and the construction of a new bridge to accommodate high traffic flow in 2026, as scheduled by the Ministry of Public Works (SOP). The project is 90 percent approved and validated by the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT).
The head of the state agency, Pedro Cepeda Anaya, mentioned that the bridge, also known as the World Trade Bridge, currently has eight lanes and will add 10 more to increase its capacity to 18.
He noted that during 2024, two technical, legal, and financial information submissions were made to the SICT for the expansion of the concession, which expires in July 2026.
He emphasized that preliminary studies, including the Environmental Impact Statement, have been completed. The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources gave its approval, authorizing the construction of the project as requested. He also mentioned the importance of having payment for the cleared right of way in order to begin the corresponding work.
“This bridge carries out international trade operations and, due to its location, is considered the main border crossing in Latin America,” the public servant stated.
The expansion of the World Trade Bridge and the new crossing will connect the Mexico-Nuevo Laredo and United States corridors, thus strengthening the country’s economic and commercial exchange, in addition to consolidating Tamaulipas as a first-class transportation and logistics hub.
Cepeda Anaya added that Nuevo Laredo is the border crossing that connects the industrial distribution centers of the United States of America, Canada, and Mexico via the shortest route.
