Russia vs. UNAM: Why did Putin’s embassy in Mexico attack the university?

244

The Russian Embassy in Mexico issued a statement against the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) on social media, as a protest in the context of the hostage exchange with Ukraine and the talks for a possible ceasefire.

“Could it be that humanitarian principles are only applicable in certain circumstances?” the Russian embassy asked UNAM as a protest, a topic that went viral on social media and to which the university did not respond.

What did UNAM do that angered the Russian Embassy in Mexico?

It all began on May 22, when UNAM reported that a Ukrainian soldier, wounded in the war with Russia, was able to walk again thanks to a prosthesis made at UNAM.

According to UNAM, the soldier, named Sergey, lost his leg after a Russian mine exploded in November 2022.

After surgery, months of rehabilitation, and a prosthesis that didn’t work, the soldier received help from a Ukrainian outreach program that, through non-governmental organizations, helps war wounded and veterans.

That’s where UNAM came in. Through Ukrainian Civil Society in Mexico, with the help of the Ukrainian Embassy in Mexico and the Ukrainian Ministry of Health, they helped Sergey obtain a new prosthesis, as well as support for his mental health.

The prosthesis was created by a group of specialists from the National School of Higher Studies (ENES) in Juriquilla, Querétaro, where a specialized team, led by Luisa Alejandra Santos Borráez, worked on the development of his prosthesis.

To achieve this, the soldier had to travel to Mexico in November of last year, and after multiple studies involving experts in medicine, physical therapy, and nutrition, they provided appropriate treatment for the leg’s repair, as well as a comprehensive plan to help the man walk again.

UNAM presented this entire matter as an achievement, although Russia didn’t like it.

What was the Russian Embassy’s complaint to UNAM?

Days after UNAM shared the story of Ukrainian soldier Sergey, the Russian Embassy, a country ruled by Vladimir Putin, complained about why the institution helped Ukraine and not the soldiers during the 2014 “coup d’état” in Ukraine.

“For some reason, we did not find a similar humanitarian action by UNAM in 2014, when, as a result of a coup d’état in Ukraine, individuals professing neo-Nazi ideas came to power and started a war against their own population in the east of the country,” Russia said, with question mark emoji.
