WHAT HAPPENED?

Following the recent Liga MX Owners’ Assembly, it was officially announced that the Gallos Blancos de Querétaro have initiated the sale process, a key step toward reducing timeshare ownership in Mexican soccer.

The potential buyer is a US investment group led by Marc Spiegel, who is now awaiting approval from Mexico’s Federal Economic Competition Commission (COFECE) to finalize the deal.

Liga MX President Mikel Arriola confirmed the news and highlighted the international interest the league continues to generate.

“We welcome the update on Querétaro with optimism, as negotiations have been going on for a considerable amount of time. If all requirements are met, we are confident that the financial closing will be successful and on good terms. This reflects the growing global value of Mexican clubs,” Arriola stated.

He also noted that the sale not only represents a step toward a more transparent league structure but also reflects the growing appeal of the league to international investors. Although official figures have not been confirmed, Grupo Caliente, the club’s owner, has reportedly set a price of $35 million.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The transaction would end one of the most controversial timeshare cases in Liga MX. Grupo Caliente, also the owner of the Xolos de Tijuana, took control of Querétaro in 2022 following violent incidents during a match against Atlas at Corregidora Stadium.

Marc Spiegel, a Kentucky-born entrepreneur, built his fortune in the waste management industry. He is the co-founder of Rubicon Global, an Atlanta-based company recognized for its innovative technology solutions and industry leadership.

WHAT MIKEL ARRIOLA SAID

Liga MX President Mikel Arriola highlighted the league’s steady growth in attendance and viewership following the 2025 Clausura. “Liga MX closed the season with solid numbers: an average of 22,328 fans per game, totaling nearly four million viewers, a 4% increase compared to the previous tournament,” Arriola said.

He also highlighted the strength of television audiences: “We averaged nearly seven million viewers per game. Although the final figures have not yet been released, they are expected to remain in that range, reflecting the impact and relevance of Liga MX for the audience.”
