An unknown number of families from the Los Tuzos subdivision in the municipality of Mineral de la Reforma, adjacent to Pachuca, were evacuated Monday night due to flooding in their homes caused by the incessant rain that began at 6 p.m. in Hidalgo and continued for five hours.

Some of the affected residents on Maestros Street in Los Tuzos stated that the flooding was due, in addition to the poor condition of the sewage system, to the fact that a group of ejidatarios (communal landowners) who owned farmland near the subdivision closed the floodgates of an irrigation canal to prevent flooding of their properties.

This allegedly caused the water to flood the housing unit.

“We are evacuating residents of the Los Tuzos subdivision due to the rains to safeguard their safety,” Morena mayor Eduardo Medecigo of Mineral de la Reforma reported at 10:30 p.m. on Monday.

“We know this has been a difficult time for many families,” the mayor added, reporting that three shelters have been set up in the neighboring city of Pachuca to “provide refuge and care” to those affected.

The first shelter was set up in the Revolución market on 12 de Octubre Street in the Periodistas neighborhood of Pachuca; the second is located at 316 Mariano Abasolo Street in the Centro neighborhood of the Hidalgo capital.

The victims were also sent to the Migrant Shelter located on kilometer 85 of the Mexico-Pachuca highway in the Ex Hacienda Pitahayas neighborhood.

As of 11 p.m., municipal authorities in Mineral de la Reforma and the Hidalgo state government had not reported the exact number of homes affected in Los Tuzos.

In addition to Los Tuzos, other neighborhoods such as Carboneras, Chavarría, Providencia, El Saucillo, and San Fernando also suffered damage, including floodwaters on streets and avenues.

Members of the Mexican Army, the National Guard, the state police, and the Public Security Directorates of Mineral de la Reforma and Pachuca are on the scene, working to drain water from homes.
