US warns of kidnappings in Jalisco and Nayarit related to dating apps

The U.S. Consulate General in Guadalajara has alerted its citizens that several cases of kidnappings related to dating apps have been reported in Jalisco and Nayarit.

Americans Warned About Dating App Kidnappings in Jalisco and Nayarit

The statement mentions that in recent months, several U.S. citizens have been kidnapped by people they met through dating apps. The cases have occurred in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, and Nuevo Nayarit, Nayarit.

It also mentions that the victims’ families are being asked for large sums of money to release the kidnapped victims. Authorities emphasize that this type of violence is not limited to just one geographic area.

U.S. authorities added that the travel advisory in Jalisco is at “Level 3: Reconsider Travel” for crimes and kidnappings. In Nayarit, the alert is at “Level 2: Take Increased Precaution” for crimes.

To avoid falling prey to this type of kidnapping, the U.S. Consulate General shared the following recommendations:

Be careful when using dating apps in Mexico.
Meet only in public places and avoid isolated locations.
Inform family members or close friends about your date plans: where you are going, who you are dating, and the app you used to meet them.
In case of emergency, call 911.
