The Nayarit Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection reported this Sunday that five patrol vehicles belonging to the Municipal Police of Mazatlán, Sinaloa, were spotted traveling through the state and were being driven by civilians.

According to the statement, the vehicles were recently acquired units being transported to the Sinaloan municipality, which is located approximately two hours from the Nayarit border.

The agency said that during the journey, the drivers temporarily deviated from the established route in order to stop to get something to eat.

After the vehicles were detected, authorities contacted security personnel in the area to verify the situation.

Regional security officials confirmed that the vehicles were part of a transfer of new patrol cars to the Mazatlán municipal police department.

The Nayarit SSPC also explained that the units were stopped on the bypass road for a preventive inspection.

Following the inspection, authorities confirmed that both the official vehicles and their documentation were fully in order.

According to local media, the Mazatlán municipal government had purchased 10 patrol vehicles that departed from Guadalajara, Jalisco, but five of them were diverted due to a navigation error after stopping for food in Tepic.

After failing to take the correct route to their destination, they ended up in the municipality of San Cayetano, Nayarit.
