With an investment of 469 million pesos, the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT) is advancing the modernization of the Fonatur Roundabout, a key project to improve mobility in the tourist corridor between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, in Baja California Sur. The project is estimated to benefit 2.6 million tourists and more than 350,000 residents of the region.

The project, which will be 1.5 kilometers long, seeks to streamline access to the San José del Cabo International Airport, as well as to the toll road that connects the main tourist destinations in the area. Its main components include an overpass, a traffic-lighted roundabout, a bike lane, an inclusive pedestrian bridge, and urban amenities such as street lighting and road signs.

The Deputy Director of Public Works for the SICT in the state, Ricardo García, explained that the new interchange will ease long-distance traffic, providing greater road safety for those traveling on the road. The area registers a daily average of more than 48,000 vehicles, and during peak hours, traffic can exceed 50,000 cars, one of the main complaints of the local population.

In addition to the benefits for motorists and tourists, the project includes a 3,000-square-meter bike path that will run around the perimeter of the roundabout and connect to the hotel zone. 19,500 square meters of sidewalks and pedestrian walkways will also be installed, reinforcing the focus on sustainable mobility and pedestrian inclusion.

Work has already begun with the construction of a storm drain channel, and the relocation of 500 plant species is planned to mitigate the environmental impact. The project package also includes retaining walls, drainage works, asphalt and hydraulic concrete pavements, and vertical and horizontal signage.

Regarding the allocated resources, 200 million pesos are expected to be spent in 2025 and the remaining 269 million in 2026. During the construction phase, 496 direct jobs and nearly 2,000 indirect jobs will be created.
