Criminal groups exchanged gunfire on the afternoon of June 10 on a highway connecting two municipalities in Michoacán, where they set fire to a public transport vehicle.
According to initial reports, the incident occurred on the Zitácuaro-Benito Juárez highway. Quadratín reported that the confrontation occurred at the intersection known as La Y, where a public transport van was also set on fire.
Due to these incidents, authorities from all three levels of government deployed a ground and air operation to locate those responsible, who fled.
Members of the Secretariats of Public Security (SSP), National Defense (Defense), and the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) maintain a security presence in the municipalities of Juárez and Zitácuaro.
“In response to the violent events reported in the municipality of Zitácuaro, where vehicles were set on fire, air and ground surveillance operations are underway to find those responsible,” reported the Michoacán SSP.
At the same time, video surveillance and monitoring efforts continue through C5 Michoacán cameras to provide timely response to any emerging incidents. Vehicle inspection checkpoints were also deployed to ensure traffic flow and traffic safety on roads.
This attack comes one day after drone bomb attacks were reported near the Benito Juárez borough, an area disputed by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and the Familia Michoacana (FM).
Videos released on social media on Monday, June 9, showed images that allegedly correspond to the drone attack.
Local authorities confirmed that no one was injured or killed in the incident, although material damage was reported in the area.
According to the Michoacán Public Security Secretariat (SSP), no casualties were reported among security officers or injured civilians.
In a statement, the agency stated: “In light of reports of alleged attacks on authorities and the alleged casualty of police officers in the municipality of Juárez, we report that no security officers or civilians have been killed or injured in the area.”
Despite this, images shared on social media showed smoke rising from a structure near the government facilities.
State authorities reported that security operations will continue in the municipalities of Juárez and Tuzantla, with the participation of the Michoacán Attorney General’s Office, the Mexican Army, and the National Guard.
Journalist Konrado Álvarez, in a news program with journalist Michelle Rivera on Radio Fórmula, cited military sources who indicated that the target of the attack was government facilities in Benito Juárez.
However, the explosive hit a neighboring building, causing material damage, including a dental office. So far, no arrests have been reported related to the attack.
In a related incident, on June 8, the Michoacán SSP reported the deactivation of improvised explosive devices in the municipality of Juárez. According to the official report, security agents located a total of 18 devices designed to be launched from drones.
In addition, 28 kilograms of explosive materials were seized, including aluminized gunpowder, sulfur, black aluminum, potassium chlorate, and detonating caps. All the material was handed over to the competent authorities.
In a message posted on social media platform X, the SSP emphasized: “28 kg of explosive material, including aluminized gunpowder, sulfur, black aluminum, potassium chlorate, and detonating caps, were seized. Everything was handed over to the competent authority. We continue to strengthen security!”
