For the fifth consecutive day, thousands of people have come out in California and other cities across the United States to protest the raids carried out by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Some of the demonstrations have led to clashes, prompting the U.S. ambassador to Mexico to speak out against them.
On the official social media accounts of Ronald Johnson, U.S. ambassador to Mexico, a new message was released regarding the protests in his country. Although he reiterated his support for Donald Trump, he emphasized his message of support for President Claudia Sheinbaum, who hours earlier had been singled out by Kristi Noem, Secretary of Homeland Security.
“I once again join President Donald Trump and President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo in condemning the violent protests taking place in the United States. These actions are not helping; on the contrary, they create more problems for the innocent majority. Order and the rule of law will be restored,” he wrote on his profile known as @USAmbMex.
This Tuesday, June 10, marked the 10th day of protests against the anti-immigrant policies imposed by the Donald Trump administration. The number of people in the streets has forced the federal government to order the deployment of National Guard troops and Marines to the state of California, which has caused disagreements with local authorities.
Claudia Sheinbaum denies Kristi Noem’s allegations
The situation in California has captured the attention of federal authorities in the United States. In this regard, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem singled out Claudia Sheinbaum for allegedly encouraging the protests. In this regard, the Mexican president denied the statements.
“I inform you that this is absolutely false. Here is my statement from yesterday, in which I clearly condemn violent demonstrations. We have always been against them, and even more so now, in the high position I hold. On the other hand, our position is and will continue to be the defense of honest, hardworking Mexicans who support the United States economy and their families in Mexico,” the Mexican president wrote in a post on X.
Despite the intention of authorities in the United States to discourage the demonstrations, they spread to other cities in the country on Tuesday, such as Seattle, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Austin. Furthermore, it is possible that the protests will spread to more districts over the weekend.
