The Sonora State Attorney General’s Office (FGJES) filed charges against two Hermosillo municipal police officers for allegedly kidnapping and abandoning several people in the municipality of Navojoa during the Pitic Festival in late May, as well as for another crime.
According to authorities, several people were detained by municipal police officers during the festival, and in at least three cases, they were taken on buses near the city of Navojoa to be abandoned.
The incidents were reported directly to the State Human Rights Commission (CEDH). As a result of the investigation, the first two arrest warrants were issued against the officers, identified as Ricardo “N” and Pedro Javier “N,” which were served on Tuesday, June 10.
Both men are accused of alleged responsibility for the crimes of abuse of authority and illegal deprivation of liberty.
Ricardo “N” and Pedro Javier “N” were brought before a judge, and their charges for the aforementioned crimes were filed at a hearing. Meanwhile, their defense requested an extension of the 144-hour constitutional term to decide whether to commit them to trial.
The men were transferred to a Social Reintegration Center (CEFERESO) while their legal status is determined.
The local Public Prosecutor’s Office reported that the investigation into the case is ongoing and will provide more information in the coming days.
Arrests were made against people who perform trades.
According to Gustavo Rómulo Salas Chávez, head of the Sonora State Attorney General’s Office, several people who claimed to be bricklayers, security guards, car washers, and even day laborers were detained by municipal police officers while they were at the festival.
“In at least three cases, and we know there are more people, they were taken on buses near the city of Navojoa, where they were abandoned,” he commented.
One of the complaints was made during the event, when a man climbed onto the stage and claimed to have been arbitrarily detained by municipal officers, which led to the investigation of the case.
“This person who climbed onto the stage also stated that he was beaten and taken into custody by immigration authorities, without the authority that detained him having the authority to do so. He was ultimately placed in a shelter by the state government,” the prosecutor told the media.
