Municipal authorities along the Sonora border are on alert and waiting for a possible mass deportation of people from the United States, given the situation arising from the anti-immigrant raids in Los Angeles, California.
At the borders of San Luis Río Colorado, Nogales, and Agua Prieta, where the federal government has set up shelters as part of the “Mexico Te Abraza” strategy, the centers are ready to receive Mexicans.
The mayor of the border city of Nogales, Juan Gim Nogales, indicated that the federal government has alerted the main municipalities along the Mexican border about a possible increase in deportations of Mexicans in the coming days.
He lamented the events that have occurred in the city of Los Angeles and confirmed that adequate conditions exist at that border to receive those who are being repatriated.
He indicated that on average, between 60 and 80 people repatriated from the neighboring country have been received daily.
“The priority of the state and federal governments is to maintain the temporary shelters set up to receive our fellow citizens in the near future, as the plan is to keep them open until December to address any contingencies,” he said.
Gim Nogales explained that the temporary shelter operating at the “Estrellas Nogalenses” sports complex has the capacity to serve up to 3,000 people.
For his part, the mayor of Agua Prieta, José Manuel Quijada Lamadrid, explained that the border municipality will be monitoring the potential impact on migration flows that may result from the increase in raids in the United States.
Although the largest deportation flows are occurring along the borders of Nogales and San Luis, he remains vigilant about the situation in the US.
