Same-sex marriages are on the rise in Durango; women predominate.

This statistic is even more significant when compared to the 2021 data, when only three same-sex marriages were registered statewide, out of a total of 8,282. All three were between women, representing just 0.03 percent of the total. No marriages between men were reported that year.

In contrast, in 2023, 7,735 marriages were recorded in Durango, of which 124 were between same-sex couples, equivalent to 1.6 percent of the total, a significant increase compared to the 0.03 percent recorded two years earlier.

This increase is related to the approval by the State Congress, on September 19, 2022, already under this state administration, of same-sex marriage in Durango.

Of these 124 same-sex marriages registered in 2023, a total of 77 were between women (66 percent) and 47 between men (38 percent), so marriage between women continues to be more common.

Nationally, Mexico City tops the list with the highest percentage of same-sex marriages, at 4.8 percent. The national average is 1.3 percent, placing Durango above the average.

Regarding divorces registered in 2023, 99.6 percent were between heterosexual couples, while only 0.4 percent were between same-sex couples, according to the same INEGI report.
