Half of companies have LGBTQ+ inclusion strategies

In the country, it is estimated that around five million people self-identify as LGBTI+, according to data from INEGI (National Institute of Statistics and Geography), and in Durango, there are 96,540 people, equivalent to seven percent of the population in that age group, according to the 2021 National Survey on Sexual Diversity (ENDISEG).

Companies are at different stages of this process: 26 percent are scaling up their initiatives and implementing them at the organizational level; 18 percent are already working on transforming their internal culture, and another 12 percent are leading innovative initiatives within their industry. However, nine percent have yet to take action.

“Today more than ever, companies have the responsibility to build environments where all people, regardless of their identity or orientation, can develop freely and equitably. Inclusion is not only an ethical issue; it is also a pillar for innovation and organizational growth,” said Gabriela Medina, director of the ManpowerGroup Foundation.

Among the main actions implemented, it is worth noting that 71 percent of companies have established non-discrimination policies based on orientation, gender identity, and expression.

Furthermore, 66 percent offer training on diversity issues; 63 percent have begun hiring with an inclusive approach, and 54 percent have anonymous systems for reporting potential cases of discrimination.

“The integration of this community into the formal workforce presents challenges, as rejection manifests itself in practices such as exclusion from hiring processes or the creation of hostile work environments, motivated by prejudice, misinformation, or bias among employers and colleagues,” added Medina.

Despite the progress, there are still areas for improvement: only 45 percent of organizations celebrate LGBTQ+ diversity internally, and the same percentage do so externally, for example, on social media or in public campaigns. Furthermore, only 49 percent have defined and promoted the use of inclusive language.
