The San Francisco Dam, also known as Becerra Dam, located in the Lomas de Becerra neighborhood of the Álvaro Obregón borough of Mexico City, overflowed on Sunday evening, June 29th, causing significant road disruptions in the area.
The incident occurred as a result of the accumulation of garbage at the site and the heavy rains that hit the Mexican capital. Several puddles exceeding 30 centimeters in height also formed, causing public transportation trucks to be filmed in the current.
According to the Mexico City Secretariat of Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection (SGIRPC), the most significant puddles were recorded on Luis G. Urbina and Jalalpa streets, both in the Lomas de Becerra neighborhood. These arteries were affected for several hours, complicating traffic for dozens of motorists.
To mitigate the situation and prevent accidents, members of the Citizen Security Secretariat (SSC) and SGIRPC personnel deployed an operation in the area, closing affected roads and clearing drains.
The capital’s authorities shared on social media, specifically on their X (formerly Twitter) account, that emergency services are working intensively, as the force of the water swept trash and mud through the streets, although no flooded homes have been reported so far.
Social media users shared images and videos showing how the water surpassed the maximum level of the dam, carrying trees and debris with it.
Shortly before the dam overflowed, authorities had activated a Purple Alert due to the persistent heavy rains in the Álvaro Obregón municipality during the afternoon and evening of Sunday, June 29, 2025.
Meanwhile, rainfall in the State of Mexico is also occurring, causing flooding and keeping authorities on alert.
The rains recorded this Sunday caused the Mayorzago River to overflow its banks in the municipality of Xonacatlán, State of Mexico. Users report homes being affected.
The heavy rainfall in the Toluca Valley caused the tributary’s levels to exceed their capacity, causing it to flow into the town of San Antonio.
Neighbors report that water entered their homes, although there is no preliminary report of affected homes or injuries.
Municipal authorities are working on site to address the emergency and the affected residents.
