Heavy rains expected in Tamaulipas due to Tropical Storm Barry
Governor Américo Villarreal Anaya chaired the extraordinary session of the State Civil Protection Council this Sunday to monitor and reinforce all precautionary measures in anticipation of the development of Tropical Storm Barry, which remains in the Gulf of Mexico.

“We are organized and have the capacity to resolve, and we can respond in coordination and unity,” the governor assured members of the state cabinet, representatives of federal agencies, and commanders of the National Defense, Navy, and National Guard.

Villarreal Anaya urged everyone to remain vigilant, keep the population properly informed, and monitor forecasts to avoid impacts from the rainfall, which will intensify starting this Sunday afternoon, mainly in the south of the state and the sugarcane region.

The session, moderated by Héctor Joel Villegas González, Secretary General of Government, along with the State Coordinator of Civil Protection, Luis Gerardo González de la Fuente, also included remote participation by the mayors of El Mante, Madero, Aldama, Altamira, and Tampico, and the mayor of González, Miguel Zúñiga, in person.

PC meteorologist Jesús Tovar Díaz explained that the hydrometeorological phenomenon rapidly evolved from a tropical depression, reaching the Gulf of Mexico coast this Sunday with sustained winds of 65 km/h (40 mph) and gusts reaching 85 km/h (53 mph).

The National Meteorological Service report predicts this system will make landfall this Sunday afternoon and evening, near the border between Veracruz and Tamaulipas.

Operation Reactivated in Ciudad Victoria

Given the forecast for increased rainfall due to the arrival of Barry, the mayor of Victoria, Eduardo Gattás Báez, instructed the reactivation of the relief operation for the population through the coordination of Civil Protection and Public Services of the Municipality.

In the preliminary report, the director of PC Victoria, Livio Flores Rodríguez, reported that due to the intense rainfall, assistance was provided to people stranded in their vehicles.

When the storm drains reached 90 percent of their capacity, flooding occurred on 16 Legorreta Avenue, Michoacán Street, José Sulaiman Street, and Eje Vial with Conrado Castillo, as well as puddles at intersections throughout the city.

Carlos Charles Ortiz, Secretary of Public Services, indicated that cleaning crews are inspecting drainage grates and culverts at major intersections to remove trash, as well as removing trash and fallen trees from roads to prevent traffic disruptions.

He recommended that the public avoid taking out the trash after hours to prevent stormwater from carrying household waste into storm drains and prevent flooding.
