Cold temperatures are about to arrive in Mexico, as in September the National Meteorological Service (SMN) will begin monitoring the 2026–2027 cold front season, which will end in May of next year.
According to Fabián Vázquez Romaña, general coordinator of the SMN, at least 56 cold fronts are forecast to affect the country during the coming months, a figure that exceeds the totals recorded in recent years.
With monitoring of climate phenomena such as “El Niño,” which continues to strengthen during the current rainy season, along with various atmospheric factors such as the presence of cyclones, December and January 2027 are forecast to be the coldest months.
How many cold fronts will there be in September?
According to the SMN forecast, 3 cold fronts are expected to reach Mexican territory during September. There are also expected to be 7 in October, 8 in November, 9 in December, 8 in January, 7 in February, 6 in March, 6 in April, and 2 in May, for a total of 56 frontal systems.
Authorities also stated that during the winter season, some cold air masses originating in Canada and the United States, when interacting with abundant moisture, can produce winter storms in northwestern Mexico.
How to protect yourself during low temperatures
When a cold front arrives, the recommendation is to dress in layers, covering the face, head, hands, and ears; consume nutritious foods and hot beverages; and cover the nose and mouth when leaving warm places to avoid sudden temperature changes.
Likewise, Civil Protection recommends preventing risks by inspecting homes and heating systems. It is also recommended to stay informed exclusively through official forecasts and alerts issued by local authorities.
Another vital recommendation during low temperatures is not to use braziers, ovens, or stoves to heat rooms, nor to sleep near heaters, since combustion in enclosed spaces produces carbon monoxide, a toxic gas that is imperceptible and potentially fatal.
