On July 19 and 20, Playa del Carmen will host the Bull Shark Fest, a social and ecological event aimed at preserving one of the city’s most emblematic species.

Authorities presented the project, which will take place in both Leona Vicario Park and the Sayab Planetarium.

“The bull shark is today our symbol of identity and a symbol of Playa del Carmen unity (…) we will celebrate the majesty of this species and the deep connection it has with our culture, our ecosystem, and our shared future. From the Ministry of Tourism, we recognize the importance of sharing conscious, responsible, and regenerative tourism; our commitment is clear: to support and promote issues that compromise conservation,” said Estefanía Hernández Flores, Secretary of Tourism for Playa del Carmen.

During these two days, activities will be carried out to disseminate information about the species, which primarily arrives in winter in the marine waters off the coast of Playa del Carmen.

“Approximately 30,000 tourists come to Playa del Carmen every winter to see this, which we can see in the seas, in the waters. Just as we, as residents of Playa del Carmen, have the opportunity to see it, it is a great responsibility to care for and protect them, and this project is proof of that, where the community, science, and authorities can achieve positive results,” said Ceci Navarro Balché Project.

In the coming days, the lineup of activities for the festival will be announced. Authorities hope to make it a permanent event to attract sustainable tourism to the city.

With this, the organizers said, they seek to dispel the paradigm that this species attacks humans, when it is a fish that thousands of tourists have been able to see up close in the sea, thus creating another attraction for Playa del Carmen.
